The Art of Gratitude

The windshave swept in autumn temperatures, and days are increasingly shorter. Our fires are burning, as we sip hot cider.We warm up in our favorite coffee shop with mocha or chai. Beautiful leaves cheer us. We can't help smiling as we approach one of America's oldest and bestloved holidays, Thanksgiving. Ourchildren feel the excitement, too.

Forparents, Thanksgiving brings an opportunity to teach mindful gratitude. Are we grown ups thankful? Are we setting agood example of what that means? Even during dark times, there is some light inour world. Is it not true? It may be the kind deed of an encouraging friend, asmiling child, or a cup of tea.

Aroundthe studio we have a tradition of adding leaves of thankfulness to a tree. You can do this with your children. Paint a tree trunk on a large piece of paper. Leaves may be traced from real autumn leaves,or children may cut random shapes in autumn colors. Make your pile of leaves in the warm colorsof autumn: red, burgundy, orange, rust, gold, yellow, and brown.

When yourfamily gathers around the Thanksgiving table give a "leaf" to eachperson. Encourage guests to write ontheir leaf something from the past year for which they are thankful. Have thechildren collect the leaves and attach to the tree with glue dots, ortape. Everyone will love this tree andthe conversations it inspires. TheThanksgiving tree motivates us to look within for the many reasons we have toexpress our thanks, whether they are large or seemingly insignificant.

We are thankful and excited this year toshare excerpts from the Nutcracker ballet with folks who might not have theopportunity to view it otherwise: families in need, seniors citizens in specialcare facilities and the ladies living at the Vineland Developmental Center. Save some of the beautiful glow of autumn's leaves by making this branch to decorate your home:

Paint lots of paper coffee filters with watercolors in beautiful fall colors...red, orange, gold, deep green, and burgundy. The colors will bleed together beautifully.

Make sure you give the kids colors that don't get muddy when mixed.

So...give them yellow and red, or yellow and brown, or green and yellow.

Just don't give them all of the colors at the same time, or you might end up with all brown leaves.

When the filters are dry, use scissors to cut them into the shapes of leaves.

With small children, any shape will do.

They will enjoy the process, so encourage them to cut along with you.

And praise their wild shapes.

Find a suitable branch in your backyard, or from the the forest.

Glue your amazing coffee filter leaves all over it using white glue like Elmers.

Keep in mind that if your branch will be hung overhead, you need leaves facing down.
When dry hang your branch with monofiliment or thin ribbon in an autumn color.

You may want to gather the children under your branch to enjoy some good Autumn books.

Magnolia Hill Graphic Design and Animation instructor, Bryce Smith, is a featured artist at the World Trade Center beginning November 3rd. Pongtopia showcases the work of Bryce and other legendary graffiti artists. Proceeds from the sale of Bryce's work and all other artworks will benefit Operation Design, a nonprofit that works with NYC public schools to promote the fact that great design creates ideal environments in which to learn, work and thrive.

Pounding and Pressing Matters

It’s the time ofyear when we are getting into the groove of new schedules, and working out allof the pressing matters that accompany a new school year. We are at home in the rhythm of the days and coolertemperatures. Nevertheless, we stillencounter an off day here or there. Youknow the feeling...those days when you feel like pounding fists into a pillowbecause the frustrations, some silly and some complex, have built one upon theother. Even within the peaceful walls ofMagnolia Hill Studios, we have days that are less than calm.

If you are goingto pound something, why not make it good? If you have never pounded leaves, it's time to try. Round up the kids and some fabric: cotton,linen, or muslin. Cut it into the shapeyou want. You may also use card stock,or linen paper. Next, take the childrenoutside for some sunshine and autumn leaves. Red leaves rock for this little project, and the juicier the better.

You are going toplace those leaves on top of the fabric and pound them with a hammer. Kids love this and you will, too. Here is how:

Place yourfabric on a board, or other hard surface. Arrange leaves on one half of the fabric. Fold remaining half over the leaves. With a rubber mallet or hammer, beat yourfabric. Don't stop until the juices fromthe leaves are coming through. Open the fabricand peel away the leaves and voila! Drapeyour long rectangle in half over a stick, tie with some twine, and you have anautumn banner.

Now to conquerall of those pressing matters...now, what were they? Get those extra leaves. There will be plenty, because kids lovepicking up beautiful fallen leaves. Press them! Make a mini leafpress out of corrugated cardboard and some rubber bands. You do it this way:

Cut seven piecesof corrugated cardboard into 5 x 7 inch rectangles. Cut lots of newsprint the same size. Decoratetwo pieces of cardboard, as you like. These will be the covers. Layer the cardboard and paper likelasagna. Place your leaves between thelayers of paper. Bundle it all togetherwith lots of rubber bands. You may haveto weight your contraption with a heavy book, like a big old Philly phone book.Do they make those anymore?

When your leavesare pressed, enjoy creating all sorts of things with them. Your children are sure to lead the way withlots of ideas for all of the pretty leaves.

Spend Some Time With the Leaf Man

Autumn is here, along with all of thecolorful delights it brings. You knowthem well…the beautiful falling leaves, acorns, nuts, apples, pumpkins, driedwildflowers, rich colors, delightful smells, and crunchy textures. How do we enjoy the beauty of autumn withoutbeing swallowed by the back-to-school rush and serious schedules? Are you already feeling the burden of takingon too many good activities? It allsounds good, right?

We live in a high paced society. But, we can take some steps to simplify ourschedules. Step back for a moment andtake a look at what you have planned for this school year for your family. Evaluate each activity honestly. What is the motivation for doing each one?How will it benefit your child? Is itadding something to your child’s life, or duplicating something that is alreadygoing on? Was the activity selectedbecause it suits the child’s temperament, or because peers are involved, or to keepup with the world? It is not too late toregroup for this year. Don’t be afraidto slow down and breathe a little. Childhood is fleeting. Make quietmoments together a priority. Spend some time with the Leaf Man.

Grab a backpack stuffed with an autumn book, a snack, somesturdy paper and a glue stick. Get outside. Take a cozy wool blanket, or find a bench along the way. The book LeafMan, by Lois Ehlert, is a perfect choice. This book is gorgeous and quite whimsical! It also includesleaf-identifying labels that may be used to identify the trees around you. Read your book, taking time to talk about eachbeautiful page. If this book is notavailable, choose another autumn book, or a classic fairytale. Leave books based on trendy kid’s TVcharacters behind. You want to escape alittle. After reading, send your children on a search for a variety of soft,colorful leaves. Have them arrange theirleaves into the shape of a person or animal using Leaf Man as inspiration. Glue the arrangement onto the sturdypaper. If the leaves curl, press the artbetween heavy books. Be sure to hangthis work of art where the family can enjoy it and the memory you made together.

The Magic Mushroom

Summer is winding down. The air is heavy with humidity and insects cry out. We hang on to the more relaxed pace, or at least, the hope of a gentler schedule. Maybe we’ve attained it, or maybe we realize we never will this year.

Did you allow too many “good” things to gobble your summer days? Did you avoid the heat by staying indoors, occupied by too many technical devices? Do you feel a longing to get outside with your dear ones to enjoy the last warm days of the summer? It’s not too late to enjoy being outdoors together, even if only for a short walk in nature.

Gather your family and take a walk in this hot, humid weather. Enjoy the sounds, the smells, the heat, and the sights. You will never again have this exact moment; so don’t let it pass by. Pay attention. Teach your kids how to really focus and really look at something by being the example.

This morning we walked the woodland path behind Magnolia Hill, and we saw some large, magnificent mushrooms. We took a closer look. They were thriving in the dampness of the humidity and the shade of the woodland trees. It’s a good idea to take a clipboard with some paper and a pencil when you walk. Then your kids will be ready to sketch a magnificent mushroom if they find one.

We took our sketches back to the studio and made some lovely wax resist watercolor paintings. Draw the mushroom with oil pastels. You can also use crayon. Press firmly. Then, take some watercolor paint, diluting it with water, and paint over your mushrooms. Like magic, the wax will resist the paint, making a beautiful work of art. We used copper colored liquid watercolor. After you have made the natural colored variety, make some pop art lovelies, or some psychedelic mushrooms. Your child will love hot pink mushrooms with a wash of chartreuse watercolor.

While we painted, we talked about mushrooms. In fairytales, toads sit on them and fairies play under them, or use them for umbrellas. Witches often throw them into their cauldron brew. If you keep your eyes open, you may spot a fairy ring someday. It is said that fairies gather to dance in the ring. We read all about mushrooms in our Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock.
The best part of our mushroom adventure was the memory we made of time well spent. We did not busy ourselves with great matters, or with things too sublime. Rather, we stood still. Slow down and take peace in these last few summer days.

Fall is just around the corner. Our fall schedule is being tweaked right now. We have a full line up of art and dance classes. Those of you who are interested in tap classes will be excited to hear that we have them on the schedule along with a new teacher. The Magnolia Hill teachers are training in NYC this summer with American Ballet Theater, Alvin Ailey and other fabulous companies, keeping in the very best shape so they can share their knowledge and passion for the arts with you. Current students and new students: please call to register for fall classes.

This will help us finalize the fall schedule.

Classes begin on September 12.

Summer Fun

Take a walk in the warm summer sunshine and delight in the treasures you find there. Take the whole family on a discovery walk. There is nothing that can compare with being outside.

On the way to the fireworks my family witnessed the most beautiful, blazing sunset. Did you see it? The fireworks were dim in comparison.

Sunsets, beaches, and forest paths are waiting for you. They are calling your name. Slow down, listen, look, breathe.

When you get back from your walk look at the treasures you found...the shells, pinecones, leaves, seedpods, and sticks. Grab some copper jewelry wire and wrap around some of your treasure. I was in love with shiny copper wire when I was a kid. Thread your treasure onto some string.

What a lovely little nature necklace you've made! What a lovely memory you've made together! Be with your family! Have fun!

The studios are so excited to offer the wonderful world of Whoville this summer for our little students. Ages 2 – 4 with adult; potty trained children may attend without an escort.

We have designed a curriculum of art projects mixed with spoonfuls of art history and some very creative movement and music for the very young based on the world of Dr. Seuss.

Does your little one love The Cat in the Hat? Horton? The Whos?

Thing One and Thing Two? We are crazy about them!!

Each day will feature a theme…like Green Eggs and Ham (bakers day),

One Fish Two Fish (seashore fun) and The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!

This is a gentle introduction to some of our favorite Seussisms,

including the wonderful Whoville. A snack straight from the Whoville bakery

will be included each day. Seussical dress up fun and closing day showcase party.

This magical workshop of fun is $130 for the 5 days. All materials are included.

Magnolia Hill Returns to Lakeside for 4th Annual Presentation: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons

Notices taped to the walls of the entry way alert performers of duties and deadlines as they make final preparations for this year’s production. Costumes have been fitted, the program has been set and sent to the printer, and each movement has been rehearsed. Performers will take the stage at Lakeside Middle School on June 18, 2011 to perform the iconic Classical piece, Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, showcasing art from the Baroque and Rococo movements.

The Four Seasons will be told through the eyes of a traveler as he journeys through the movements of each season with over 50 performers, ranging in age from 2-23.

“We believe the arts are for everyone,” comments Director Sandy Smith, “and we are dedicated to producing presentations that are engaging for people of all ages and all backgrounds. This is fun for us, and we’re delighted to share the fun with our community.”

Performances on the evening of June 18^th will include ballet, hip-hop, and Irish dance styles. The visual arts students of Magnolia Hill have prepared sets, backdrops, and props. An art exhibition will be presented in the lobby of the theater. Doors open at 6:30 pm; curtain at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10, available at the door or in advance.

Founded in 2004, Magnolia Hill Studios was established to cultivate artists and performers as well as audiences for the arts in the South Jersey area. Magnolia Hill offers year-round classes and summer workshops in dance and visual art that emphasize the arts while integrating academic enrichment.

Art and Dance Students

Photo day is May 28th. If you cannot make this date please contact us and we will try to schedule an appointment for you on June 4th. Please have your child photographed for us even if you do not plan to buy photos! Dance students must arrive ready with hair, make-up, dance shoes and costumes. Art Students may wear whatever they like. We will have props for artists. You may bring a painting, but we will have some for the easel. The suggested schedule is to alleviate congestion and your waiting time, but, it is flexible. Pricing for photos is posted in the studio and will be sent home with your child.

We need ads for MHS's spring Showcase 2011, Antonio Vivaldi: The Four Seasons. We are seeking professional ads and are also extending to families and friends the ability to purchase personal ads, photo ads and low cost boosters to congratulate individual dancers and artists.

Do you run or work for a business, restaurant, or retail store? Do you provide legal, accounting, landscaping, catering, tutoring or other services? Does your child attend a private school or non-profit organization? Do you regularly patronize a local business or restaurant and know the owner/manager? Doctors and dentists are usually willing to place an ad for their patients. Friends and relatives love personal ads. MHS needs this source of revenue to support this terrific performance opportunity and art exhibition for our children.Please sell as many as possible.

It is an opportunity for area individuals and families to enjoy Vivaldi's work presented in a whimsical, child friendly way.

Magnolia Hill Spring...Poetry in the Studio

Magnolia Hill is very excited to have Elena Peeples on board this spring as a volunteer intern. She has already devoted many hours of her time organizing the studio, ordering costumes, substitute teaching and attending to business aspects of the studio. She has written press releases and brainstormed with Sandy and Blythe on their vision for the arts and the future of Magnolia Hill. She has volunteered her husband to install shelves and haul centerpieces created by Magnolia Hill to a benefit for the Barn Studio. If you see Elena and Michael around the studio, be sure to thank them for all they have done to help us make Magnolia Hill a great place for your children to study art and dance.

Please help Magnolia Hill welcome Elena. Sign your children up for her new class at the studio. Although she loves her volunteer work at the studio and the creative energy she has found there, a girl has to make a living.... She is teaching a lovely, 8 week class in poetry which will benefit your child's writing and analytical skills. Please join us!

Like acrylics, watercolors and oils, words can be used to paint

powerful and expressive works of art.

More than just a means to communicate our needs or ideas,

words can be beautiful and breathtaking, dynamic and impressive.

This eight-week course designed for students ages 8-12

(other ages accepted with approval of director),

will focus on developing a love for language

and an understanding of its versatility.

By exploring the work of modern poets and experimenting

with our own language,

we will discover how to paint new pictures with words.

About the teacher.... Elena Peeples was born in Honduras and immigrated to

the United States at the age of seven. Because of her bilingual experience,

she developed first an interest and then a love for any and all languages:

their functionality, versatility, and beauty. She has a BA in Applied

Linguistics from Iowa State University and has recently returned from

teaching ESL/EFL in East Asia.

You know Aladdin and Jasmine aren’t the only ones who like to explore the world on a magic carpet. We’ll set off to explore some mysteries of the world like the wonders of Ancient Egypt, Easter Island, Coral Castle, lost civilizations and more. We’ll take a look at these wonders through history, music, art and exciting art projects. Make a “coral castle,” construct a treasure from Egypt, or a model of Stonehenge. Hop on the magic carpet and take a ride with the studio kids. Be an archeologist, an artist, an explorer or just enjoy the ride!
